Astro Bot credits a joyous dev homage

Just like Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot also has a captivating end credits scene. Team Asobi has crafted a playful sequence to beautifully conclude this platforming masterpiece. While the credits of Astro’s Playroom had a simple design, in Astro Bot they have their own unique level called “Credits Clash”. As many have noted, Astro Bot is a truly stunning homage to PlayStation’s rich history. The credits scene, however, is a joyous tribute to Astro Bot itself and the people who brought it to life.

The credits sequence begins with an explosion of confetti, followed by Astro smashing through red and yellow blocks that spell out “GAME DESIGN”. Blocks fly everywhere as confetti cascades down. The bots that you’ve collected along the way – out of a total of 300 – cheer from their PlayStation paraphernalia. To reach the next platforms, Astro has to hop along PlayStation memory cards, and each one displays the name of a developer. When Astro’s feet touch one, even more colorful blocks spill onto the level, once again highlighting the respective developer’s name. Not only is it visually stunning, but it also gives each person their own moment to shine.

It continues in this delightful manner throughout the credits, taking you through different segments of the team. Along the way, Astro will swap out his various power-ups, the ones that you’ve been using throughout the game. The first is the bulldog backpack, which essentially provides a powerful forward thrust, helping him smash through obstacles and bridge long gaps. Later, it’s a monkey with cymbals, and its explosive claps can burst blocks like fireworks.

It’s a truly lovely way to end the game. Who doesn’t love playable end credits? The main credits flow into more detailed ones that unfold side by side with clips of Astro and his pals.

During the secondary end credits, Team Asobi thanks the third-party publishers as “long-time friends” – mainly the list of companies with character appearances in Astro Bot. However, there are a few on that list that aren’t in the game yet: Stellar Blade by Shift Up; Rayman, Assassin’s Creed, and Beyond Good & Evil by Ubisoft; Rise of the Ronin by Koei Tecmo; and Croc by Argonaut Games. It’s possible that Team Asobi licensed the characters but decided not to include them, but it’s also possible that they’re intended to be added through DLC. The studio head of Team Asobi, Nicolas Doucet, said in an interview with Quest Daily that Astro Bot will get a small update with speedrunning leaderboards, as well as “some characters that [Team Asobi] didn’t include yet”. However, there’s no word yet on when that is expected to happen.
