While OpenAI keeps on adding new features to ChatGPT Plus, the free version of ChatGPT has remained rather stagnant since its release. But that’s no longer the case.

One of the most outstanding features that was exclusive to ChatGPT Plus – custom GPTs – is now accessible for free to use. As the name implies, it allows users to create customized versions of ChatGPT to fulfill a specific task. You can provide them with additional knowledge and guide their behavior through custom prompts, all without the need for coding.

People have been creating GPTs since last year, and, as you can imagine, there’s now a GPT for just about everything: travel guides, song creators, presentation makers, coloring book generators, logo designers – anything you can think of.

The GPT store showcases the most popular models, making it easy to find the best custom GPTs. It also has a featured section and a “By ChatGPT” section filled with GPTs crafted by the OpenAI team.

All of this is now available to the free version – the only limitations are that you can’t create your own GPT and you don’t have access to image generation. This means GPTs like DALL·E won’t work for you.

In addition to custom GPTs, OpenAI announced GPT-4o on May 13th, and is already extending a few of its features to users of the free version. For instance, sending photos – the new model is so proficient at understanding images that it can translate a menu simply by looking at a picture of it. An example video on the OpenAI website also shows someone sending a photo of a croissant and asking for its nutritional information.

It’s not all about the 4o features, though. Paid users have been able to obtain information from the web for some time now, and now free users can as well. You’ll also be able to upload files for ChatGPT to summarize, translate, or even analyze. This means that when you send a spreadsheet, you can ask it to analyze a particular element and create a chart with the results. And while you’re chatting away, ChatGPT will be using its memory feature to store snippets of information you share about yourself and utilize them in future chats.

It’s important to note, however, that many of these features are labeled as “limited” for free users, so you’ll reach a cap at some point. When that happens, you’ll automatically revert to GPT-3.5.

Although initially it will be limited to paid users, in future updates you’ll also be able to video call with ChatGPT and enjoy almost seamless voice chatting – though you’ll have to endure its fake laughter.
