Elden Ring: Erdtree’s hated final boss nerfed at last

FromSoftware has rolled out a new update for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and the big news is that the game’s final boss, Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella, has been significantly nerfed. This comes as a relief to many Elden Ring fans who struggled with this challenging boss battle.

The latest patch notes for version 1.14 of the game highlight balance changes to Radahn. These changes include altering his action pattern at the start of the battle, adjusting some of his attack moves, reducing the damage of certain attacks, and decreasing the stamina damage of others. The attack range of some non-weapon-based attacks has also been decreased, and the visibility of some attack effects has been improved.

In practice, these changes mean that multiple moves have been adjusted, making them easier to dodge and giving players more opportunities to counterattack Radahn during his two phases. One of the most notable nerfs affects his cross-slash attack, where he now swings each of his swords individually and then slashes at the player with both, but it’s much slower and has a longer recovery window.

Moves used in Radahn’s second phase have also been adjusted, making it easier to follow him when the screen is filled with Miquella’s light-based incantations. This no longer obscures the action or the boss’ whereabouts.

For months, players of Shadow of the Erdtree have been complaining about Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella being too difficult. They criticized not only his overwhelming and frenetic attack patterns but also the fact that they often had to resort to completely different playstyles just to defeat him.

Radahn has a history of being nerfed in Elden Ring. In the base game, he appeared as Starscourge Radahn, and he was similarly criticized for being too difficult in his original form. FromSoftware adjusted Starscourge Radahn less than a month after the game’s original release, but later reversed some unintended changes to his damage and hitbox sizes. Now, with the latest changes to Promised Consort Radahn/Radahn, Consort of Miquella, players are once again proud to have defeated him, perhaps even before the nerf.

The rest of version 1.14’s changes are focused on weapon, magic, and skill adjustments. For example, the damage of Backhand Blades against other players has been decreased, as has the damage of Spears’ dual wield attacks. The damage of the Pata weapon has also been reduced. The “Spread Crossbow” weapon will no longer cause the headshot damage motion when hitting another player.

Skills like Scattershot Throw have had their damage against other players decreased, and they will no longer cause the headshot damage motion. Discus Hurl has seen a decrease in the damage animation value generated when hitting another player. Weed Cutter’s poise value of follow-up attacks when used against other players has been reduced.

In terms of equipment, the attack speed of the uncharged version of the first heavy attack has been increased for certain weapon types, such as daggers, throwing blades, straight swords, great swords, colossal swords, heavy thrusting swords, curved swords, twinblade swords, katanas, great katanas, axes, flails, great spears (except Serpent-Hunter), halberds, reapers, whips (except Urumi), hand-to-hand arts, and beast claws.

The Great Katana category has seen a change where performing left handed attacks and then cancelling into subsequent right handed attacks takes longer. Hand-to-Hand Arts weapons have seen an increase in damage and a shortening of the recovery time between normal attacks and follow-up attacks. The colossal sword has had its move distance when attacking increased and its first normal attack speed sped up. Backhand Blade weapons have had their attack speed from a crouching position decreased. Small and medium shields have had their damage negation of some physical attacks increased and their guard strength enhanced. The ability to cancel into most actions after performing one-handed normal attacks with the Swift Spear has taken longer. The throwing attacks range of the Smithscript Dagger has been extended. The attribute scaling of Rellana’s Twinblade for lower Intelligence and Faith attributes has been increased. Rellana’s Cameo Talisman now has a reduced delay before the damage enhancement activates and increased damage enhancement.

Weapon Arts like Light have seen an increase in attack speed, while Darkness has also had its attack speed increased. Dynastic Sickleplay has reduced stamina consumption, increased poise damage of follow-up heavy attacks, and increased the movement distance of the first follow-up heavy attack. Shield Strike’s ability to cancel other actions to perform this weapon art now takes longer. Moon-and-Fire Stance has had its normal attack’s light wave range, poise damage, and attack speed increased, as well as its poise damage from the heavy attack. Devonia’s Vortex has seen an increase in attack power, extended the attack range of the Great Hammer’s spin, increased poise value and poise generation speed, and adjusted the damage animation recovery time when a charged attack hits another player.

Spells like Rellana’s Twin Moons have had their first and second attack ranges increased and the knockback distance of the second attack reduced. Incantations Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns has had its attack power increased and its attack power and stamina attack power against guarding enemies enhanced. The close-range hitbox of Aspects of the Crucible: Bloom now follows the player’s movement. Divine Bird Feathers has decreased the minimum delay between consecutive hits and increased its range. Furious Blade of Ansbach has had its ability to cancel into rolls take less time, increased its poise damage, and increased enemy knockback distance. Midra’s Flame of Frenzy has increased its attack speed, increased the Frenzy status buildup range against enemies, and decreased the Frenzy status buildup when using the skill. Bayle’s Flame Lightning has increased its attack power.

There have also been bug fixes. Black Pyreflies items will now reappear correctly when resting at a site of grace. A bug where performing a Light Greatsword heavy attack while jumping didn’t consume stamina has been fixed. A bug where unintended Weapon Skills could be used when equipping the Ballista in the left hand has been corrected. A bug that caused critical hit damage dealt to Taylew the Golem Smith when using certain weapons to be lower than intended has been resolved. A bug that prevented the player from acquiring runes when an enemy was killed while holding a shield has been eliminated. An issue where casting the Inescapable Frenzy Incantation using the Staff of the Great Beyond would cause its hitbox to be generated incorrectly has been fixed. A bug where whiffed backstabs with the Pata weapon had a smaller fist hitbox than intended has been corrected. A bug where some attacks of the Lizard Greatsword weren’t registered as strike attacks has been patched. Euporia can no longer increase the attack power of other weapons when its luster is restored. The issue where the restored luster effect of Euporia was sometimes displayed on different weapons has been resolved. A bug where the power of some Weapon Skills of a right-handed Falx changed depending on the level of the weapon equipped in the left hand has been fixed. A bug where the enchantment effects of certain skills were being applied to some attacks that didn’t use weapons has been corrected. A bug that could cause incorrect player motions to be performed when using lock-on for certain Skills has been eliminated. A bug that caused the Rolling Sparks Skill to go through some terrain has been fixed. The issue where the Blades of Stone Spell didn’t hit targets at a different height level correctly has been addressed. A bug where some attacks of the Bayle’s Tyranny Incantation didn’t hit multiple enemies has been patched. A bug that caused the attack of the Bayle’s Tyranny Incantation to go through certain terrain has been fixed. Godfrey’s Icon Talisman now applies to all Skills, Spells, and Incantations as intended. The bug that prevented the player from becoming translucent when the Crepus’ Vial Talisman is equipped and the Unseen Form Spell is used has been eliminated. A bug where the hitboxes of some attacks of Rellana, Twin Moon Knight were different than intended has been corrected. Issues with the “Leave” option not being selectable in the inventory menu for some equipment and certain Site of Graces being difficult to touch under certain circumstances have been resolved. Invasion spawn-in positions in some areas were adjusted to be as intended. The issue where the displayed name of certain areas was different than intended has been fixed. A bug where the combat state wasn’t released after defeating an invading NPC under certain circumstances has been eliminated. Some bugs that prevented certain effects from being displayed correctly have been fixed. The bug where the Watchful Spirit Incantation’s attacks were sometimes invisible to other players in multiplayer has been addressed. The issue where the effects of some tools and incantations weren’t correctly applied when trying to deflect or cancel has been corrected. Several performance improvements and other bug fixes have also been made. A descriptive error in the game’s credit that was incorrectly added in patch 1.12 has been corrected.
