Ford and TXU Energy, one of the largest electric providers in Texas, have forged an alliance to offer customers the privilege of free EV charging at home. Owners of the latest Ford EVs and plug-in hybrids who enroll in TXU’s Free EV Miles program stand to receive full credit on their utility bills if they charge during TXU’s 18-hour complimentary window.

In a press release, Ford expresses its aim to “enlighten Texans about the advantages of driving electric.” This unprecedented deal serves as an incentive for customers to charge during off-peak hours, which are from 7:00 PM to 1:00 PM the following day. (Charging at other times incurs the same cost as any other domestic electricity usage.)

In an email to The Verge, Eddie Fernandez, a Ford PR representative, disclosed that the program is “currently scheduled until 2026 with the intention of being ongoing.” According to Fernandez, the program is presently exclusive to Ford customers but there is a possibility of expansion to other automakers in the future. He also confirmed that Lincoln plug-in hybrids are included in the deal.

To avail of the free charging offer, you must grant TXU access to your Ford plug-in vehicle’s charging details via the My Ford Pass app, which will subsequently connect to the electricity provider’s billing system.

If you possess a 2021 or newer Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Escape PHEV, or a plug-in Lincoln and reside in a Texas county served by TXU, you can sign up on the electricity provider’s website. As an added perk, Ford will promptly send you a $100 reward card, while TXU will offer you $250 on your plan anniversary.
