In its Annual Work Trend Index, Microsoft has, unsurprisingly, released some fresh data regarding AI in the workplace. The significant figure is that according to their survey, a whopping 75% of “knowledge workers” are already utilizing generative AI at work, and this number has doubled within just the last six months alone. The survey defines “knowledge workers” as those who typically work at a desk (whether in an office or at home), which constitutes a rather broad demographic. Companies have formulated a range of policies pertaining to the usage of AI. Some companies and organizations imposed bans on ChatGPT early on, while others, as per Microsoft, believe AI is essential, with 41% of leaders reconstructing their entire businesses from the ground up to center them around AI. It is reported that 79% of leaders need to start employing AI to remain competitive, while 60% are concerned that their organization lacks a plan and vision for implementing AI. Clearly, there is a great deal of anxiety in the air surrounding the rapid ascent of generative AI from the top. Regardless of a company’s policies, however, one cannot overlook that 75% statistic. In fact, Microsoft claims that 52% of these workers don’t wish to admit that they are using AI for their most crucial tasks, and 53% are worried that the use of AI in these tasks will make them seem replaceable.

The survey further states that 78% of these workers utilize their own AI tools to expedite tasks, regardless of whether their company provides those tools or has a well-developed strategy for it. Why, one might ask? Well, according to the survey, knowledge workers are overworked and burned out – and AI can be of great assistance. “AI power users” say that generative AI is helpful in numerous ways. For instance, 92% find that AI makes workloads more manageable and enhances their creativity. And 91% even claim that AI makes them enjoy their work more. It goes without saying that all of this data leans in favor of Microsoft, a company that is deeply invested in the use of AI. Copilot is being integrated throughout all its applications and services, including Windows itself. Even these days, new laptops come with a built-in Copilot key for even more convenient access to AI.
