The controversial Recall feature has certainly grabbed the limelight from Microsoft’s Copilot+ announcements yesterday. But amidst all the attention, this new AI feature is breathing new life into Paint once again.
It’s called Cocreator, and it’s a remarkable new AI addition that can transform your simple sketch, enhanced with text, into a much more realistic and awe-inspiring image. The exciting part is that it does all this in real-time. Of course, it might not get it just right the first time, so having a bit of patience is key. The more specific details you provide regarding what you envision in the image, the better the outcome will be.

You’ll notice three options at the top right: Layers, Cocreator, and Image Creator. The distinction between Image Creator and Cocreator lies in the fact that Image Creator will solely create an image based on what you type. The Cocreator option, on the other hand, utilizes both what you draw and what you type to fashion your image.
There is also a Creativity slider that allows you to enhance or diminish the image quality, and a Style dropdown menu where you can choose from options such as Charcoal, Digital Art, Oil Painting, Watercolor, Pixel Art, Anime, Photorealistic, or Ink Sketch. Our editor who attended the event remarked that it was truly impressive in terms of how responsive the Creativity slide was and how quickly the images were being generated.
It’s precisely the kind of feature that is ideal for Paint, a software that often gets overlooked.
Some might compare Cocreator to Microsoft Designer’s little sibling, but it still manages to get the job done effectively. So, what’s the downside? Well, you’ll need a Copilot+ PC with an NPU (neural processing unit).
Although it seems there shouldn’t be any reason why your laptop’s GPU or CPU couldn’t handle this feature instead of having an NPU, Microsoft appears content to make this a unique feature of its shiny new Copilot+ PCs.
