Annapurna Interactive’s mass resig’n won’t impact Control 2, Remedy adaptions

Twenty-five employees of Annapurna Interactive resigned from the company in September following a disagreement with the founder of Annapurna Pictures, Megan Ellison, as per a Bloomberg report. Annapurna Interactive is the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures; it was reported that the former president of Annapurna Interactive, Nathan Gary, was in negotiations with Ellison to go independent with the game publishing division. Gary and two other co-leads of Annapurna Interactive left the company earlier in September, as The Hollywood Reporter stated at the time. According to the Bloomberg report, the other staff members followed suit later.

“All 25 members of the Annapurna Interactive team collectively resigned,” Gary and the former Annapurna Interactive workers told Bloomberg in a joint statement. “This was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make and we did not take this action lightly.”

Details of the dispute have not yet been disclosed.

An Annapurna Interactive spokesperson informed Bloomberg that its contracted games and projects would remain with the company. However, the news of the resignations raised numerous questions about the status of the publisher and its contracted developers. Without any staff, how would Annapurna Interactive be able to support its newly released and upcoming games? Onlookers wondered. What about the recently announced partnership with Remedy Enteratainment? Remedy and Annapurna announced in late August that the companies would co-finance Control 2 and develop TV and movie adaptations for Remedy’s Alan Wake and Control series.

The communications director of Remedy, Thomas Puha, posted on X on Thursday to confirm that there were no changes to Control 2 or its licensing rights. He stated that the deal with Annapurna was related to Annapurna Pictures, not Annapurna Interactive. Control 2 is being self-published by Remedy. “By backing Remedy’s move towards self-publishing, we’re putting our faith in their vision,” said Hector Sanchez, co-founder and president of interactive and new media at Annapurna Interactive, who recently returned to the company after leaving for Epic Games.

Several other studios have confirmed that their games are not affected by the mass resignation at Annapurna Interactive, including Wanderstop</em by Team Ivy Road, Lushfoil Photography Sim</em by Matt Newell, and The Lost Wilds</em by Great Ape Games.

Annapurna Interactive is one of the most, if not the most, prestigious game publishers, renowned for releasing award-winning games such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Gorogoa, Outer Wilds, Cocoon, and Stray. As a publisher, it typically takes on responsibilities such as funding, marketing, and quality assurance.
