ChatGPT Advanced Voice: All You Need to Know

Advanced Voice Mode: Revolutionizing ChatGPT Interactions

Advanced Voice Mode is an exciting new addition to ChatGPT, allowing users to engage in real-time, fluid conversations with the AI chatbot, eliminating the need for a text-based prompt window or back-and-forth audio exchanges. This innovative feature was first showcased at OpenAI’s Spring Update event and was made available to select Plus subscribers in late July.

According to the company, this feature “offers more natural, real-time conversations, allows you to interrupt at any time, and senses and responds to your emotions.” It can even incorporate breath breaks and simulate human laughter during the chat. The good news is that access is on the horizon if you haven’t got it yet.

When will I get Advanced Mode?
Last week, OpenAI unveiled its highly anticipated Advanced Voice feature to a limited number of its ChatGPT-Plus subscribers. Some are already enjoying it, but the scale of this initial launch and the rate at which new members are invited remain unknown. The company pledges to expand access to more users in the coming weeks and to all Plus subscribers by this fall. However, many users are eager to try it themselves. The straightforward answer is that you’ll gain access sometime between now and the fall, barring any further delays. “Fall” is a bit ambiguous, but if a full rollout to all users isn’t achieved by December, it would be considered a delay. Either way, you’ll know when you have access through an invitation email or a notification in the ChatGPT app.

What do I need to run Advanced Voice Mode on my phone?
In addition to a Plus subscription, users require an Android handset running app version 1.2024.206 or later, or an iPhone using iOS 16.4 or later and the same app version. Unfortunately, having the right equipment doesn’t guarantee a spot in the alpha release phase. Moreover, OpenAI has not disclosed details on how or why it selects specific users. If you’re fortunate to be chosen for the alpha release, OpenAI will notify you via email and you’ll also see a tooltip in the bottom-right corner of the ChatGPT mobile app to enable the new feature.

Is OpenAI going to use my conversations to train its model?
Yes, during the alpha release phase, OpenAI intends to utilize audio from conversations with Advanced Voice Mode to train its models, provided you haven’t disabled the app’s data-sharing option. It’s straightforward to do so. On your mobile app, navigate to the Data Controls tab in the Settings menu and deselect “Improve voice for everyone.”

How often and how much can I use Advanced Voice Mode?
According to OpenAI, both the inputs and outputs for Advanced Voice have daily usage limits, but specific details on the exact duration are not provided and “precise limits are subject to change.” Nevertheless, user Himels Tech has shared a video of themselves chatting with the AI for approximately 10 minutes. The AI will notify users when they have 3 minutes of chatting remaining before ending the conversation and reverting the user to the standard voice interface.

What can I, and can’t I, do with Advanced Voice Mode?
Advanced Voice Mode is essentially a novel way to interact with the same GPT-4o large language model used for text-based inquiries. In short, most actions possible with ChatGPT can also be performed with Advanced Voice, but with added novelty. Early adopters are already exploring various uses, from beatboxing to storytelling and rapid counting. However, there are safety constraints and feature limitations. Users can’t create new memories, use custom instructions, or access GPTs with it. While the AI remembers previous Advanced Voice conversations and can recall details, it can’t access previous chats conducted through text prompts or the standard voice mode. Moreover, no matter how you plead, Advanced Voice won’t sing. The company explains, “To respect creators’ rights, we’ve implemented several measures, including new filters, to prevent Advanced Voice Mode from responding with musical content, including singing.”
