Will Star Wars Jedi 3quel Mean Cal Kestis’ Death?

Fans of the Star Wars Jedi games, such as yours truly, received some excellent news from an EA investor relations presentation held on Tuesday regarding the future of the series. According to Video Games Chronicle, the company is currently working on a third game, which is intended to be the final chapter of this thrilling story following Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. These two games feature the original character Cal Kestis, and he is one of my favorite Star Wars gingers. However, despite the mention of the word “survivor” in the title of the most recent game, it seems that Cal may not have a rosy future in the greater Star Wars universe.

I received the news about this new game without any trepidation initially, as it didn’t occur to me that Cal might be about to meet his predetermined end. That was until my colleague Clayton Ashley typed in Polygon’s Slack and said, “I wonder if he will die in this one.” My other colleague Pete Volk responded, “I wonder which Disney Plus show he will have a cameo in.” Both of these are plausible scenarios for Cal’s future! But in my opinion, the former seems more likely.

Cal Kestis may have escaped Order 66, but given the time period in which he exists, his days as a Jedi on the Empire’s bad side are numbered. Additionally, like many other Star Wars characters created for time periods before A New Hope, we already know that he won’t be present for those events. (And we can only hope he doesn’t get inserted into any of them. No one wants that. No one at all!)

But that doesn’t mean his story and its conclusion can’t still be fascinating. Rogue One has shown that stories about characters who are willing to sacrifice themselves for their cause, and the audience knows in advance that this is almost certain to happen to them, can be just as poignant and narratively rich as stories where the ending is more difficult to predict.

I guess I’m saying that if Cal Kestis has to meet his end, I’m excited to see how it unfolds. Does that sound strange? Well, whatever.
