Microsoft has raised some serious privacy and security concerns regarding the upcoming launch of the highly controversial AI feature Recall as part of Copilot+ PCs. This has led to Microsoft making adjustments to Recall, including making it opt-in rather than being on by default. And now, according to an X (formerly Twitter) thread, Microsoft is giving you even more control over which apps can utilize AI.
The new feature is reportedly to be found in the Settings > Privacy & Security section > Let app use Generative AI. Users can simply toggle the feature on or off with a single click and select which specific apps are granted access to AI. The objective is to grant you enhanced control over what apps and users can employ generative AI.

The second option on the list allows you to choose which apps can use AI. However, above that is the option that enables anyone using a Windows computer to determine whether their app can utilize generative AI when the feature is enabled. The proliferation of generative AI is difficult to evade, so it will be nice to have it all centralized in one place, potentially enabling you to see which apps are making use of it.

This new option is part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26236 for Canary channel users. Apart from the setting alteration, it brings along several minor improvements such as certain bug fixes, a Microsoft Wallet-integrated store, and performance enhancements.
Some already available apps that utilize AI include Microsoft 365 Copilot and Bing Chat, which offer AI-powered features like Intelligent Recap, Live Translations, and Personalized Insights. But with these apps, AI won’t come into play unless enabled by the user.
