Hoyoverse, the behemoth game development studio and publisher behind global sensations like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, has a knack for turning up the heat when it comes to creating characters that arouse. Whether it was the outrageous boob jiggle physics upon the release of Genshin, or the heart-pounding moments in Tears of Themis, Hoyoverse never hesitates to design alluring characters. Now, with the introduction of Jane Doe in Zenless Zone Zero, the studio known for its steamy creations seems to have outdone itself.

Jane Doe is an S-rank physical anomaly character set to make an appearance in the second half of the 1.1 patch of Zenless Zone Zero. And let me tell you, she is scorching hot in the most stereotypical way. Her high-waisted shorts (which are layered over ripped tights) highlight what might be the most dramatic hip-to-waist ratio I’ve seen in a game in a long time. Other elements of her design, like that little devil tail wrapped around her leg, are designed to incite a great deal of lust from the fans. On August 30th, the developer Hoyoverse released a character demo trailer for her, and boy, is it a doozy! It has inspired both the simps and the critics alike to leave their comments.

The trailer depicts a scenario where a character is being interrogated by Jane Doe. The character, strapped tightly in a chair, pants and breathes heavily as Jane taunts them in a highly sexualized manner. Jane lowers her face between the character’s legs and shoves an apple into the character’s throat – and it’s all shown from a first-person perspective, giving the effect that she’s doing it to the viewer. Naturally, both the trailer and the character have elicited a mixed response from the fans.

Some fans are already in full adoration of Jane, and TikTok is filled with fan edits of her. One video edit that has amassed over 3 million views is filled with commenters screaming about wanting to “save hex” with her – a phrase used by fans to bypass moderation parameters on TikTok. A short clip showing Jane walking also elicited wild reactions from the fans, with one person exclaiming, “Brother, the thigh physics are diabolical! What the hell?”

However, not everyone is happy with the character. For some players, the design of the character was fine, but they didn’t like the way she was portrayed in the video. Others questioned Hoyoverse for using such a sexualized trailer to market on TikTok. The developers uploaded the trailer to the official Zenless Zone Zero account, and one of the top comments, which received over 2,200 likes, said, “The animation is so good, bro, but what exactly is the creative team thinking by making a character act like this?”

Then there are those who are simply upset. In a video watched over 186,000 times, a person superimposed text over a clip of the trailer and said, “Can’t protect [Zenless Zone Zero] anymore. This trailer is straight up disgusting.”

Hoyoverse is accustomed to treading the fine line between controversy and character design. When the game launched in 2020, people criticized the boob jiggle physics in Genshin Impact, and the developers added alternate outfits for four of its characters to cover up more of their skin. But it’s also a company that its fans truly adore for its many alluring characters. The company has always had to navigate the balance between creating beloved and sometimes sexy characters without overdoing the sexual elements. Now, it seems Zenless Zone Zero is fully embracing these aspects of the fandom.
